The refurbishment project, with a budget of 2,542,387 euros, is being carried out by the company Melchor Mascaró. The improvements include the replacement of 8,100 square metres of paving. The old slate tiles are being replaced by concrete ones, which are more resistant and adherent. In addition, a comprehensive renovation of the rainwater, drinking water and wastewater networks in the square itself and adjacent streets is being carried out.
To date, 40 % of the paving in the square has already been replaced, and accessibility improvements are being implemented to comply with current regulations. The works also include the improvement of the lighting, renovation of the traffic light network, rehabilitation of the Jaime I fountain, and intervention in tree surrounds and landscaping in the area.
During Thursday’s visit, the deputy mayor highlighted the collaboration with the Consell Insular de Mallorca’s Patrimoni department. The protection of archaeological remains of the old wall was actively discussed, with the intention of incorporating an imprint of the old layout into the final design.
The deputy mayor and the coordinator of the area met with shopkeepers and restorers in the area to inform them about the progress of the work. This initiative demonstrates the commitment of the local authorities to keep the community informed and support local businesses affected by the works.
In short, Palma’s Plaza España will be completely transformed by July 2024, offering residents and visitors a renewed and improved space. Investment in infrastructure and collaboration with the local community promises a modern plaza that reflects the charm of Palma.
