The Consell de Mallorca will reduce by 10% the Mallorca waste tariff in 2026, with retroactive effect from 1 January. The measure has been made possible following the ratification, on 16 December, in the Parliament of the Balearic Islands, of the Decree-Law on urgent measures to speed up strategic projects, which provides the legal framework for the pilot programme to transfer waste from Ibiza, specifically the residual (reject) fraction.

The reduction is also underpinned by a grant from the Government of the Balearic Islands to the Consell de Mallorca as the receiving administration for waste, either directly or indirectly through the amortisation of the cost of investments made by the service concessionaire at the Mallorca treatment plants. This grant amounts to €50 million, distributed over a period of 10 years.

The reduction in the Mallorca waste tariff, a Consell “commitment”

The President of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, highlighted that “with this cut we are fulfilling our commitment to reduce the tariff and protect the pockets of Mallorca’s residents”.

He also stressed that “while most of the country will have to face a widespread rise in the waste charge due to a state law from 2022, in Mallorca we have not only frozen this rise, but from next year we are reducing the tariff by 10%”.

For his part, the Second Vice-President and Councillor for the Environment, Rural Affairs and Sports, Pedro Bestard, said that “for this government team it is fundamental to keep our word”. In this regard, he added that “the work we do is focused on improving the day-to-day lives of residents”.

Bestard also noted that “we are very satisfied because this reduction in the tariff is going to bring relief to Mallorcans”.
