The 54th Ornithological Contest Ciudad de Palma was officially presented this Tuesday, October 8, 2024, by the Palma City Council. The event, which has become one of the most important ornithological competitions in the city, is organized by the Palma Ornithological Association (AOPM). Throughout October, November, and December, bird enthusiasts and experts will gather to participate in various specialized competitions, focusing on aspects such as color, posture, and the distinctive Spanish timbrado song of the birds.
During the presentation, the mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez Llabrés, highlighted the significance of the Ornithological Association, founded in 1970, and the fundamental role of its members, volunteers, and supporters, who have helped develop a deep ornithological culture in the city. Martínez thanked the AOPM for fostering values like respect for the environment and conservation of the natural surroundings through an activity that, in addition to promoting a passion for birds, helps preserve ecosystems.
The contest also benefits from the collaboration of the ASPACE Foundation, which contributed to designing the event’s posters. The mayor emphasized the foundation’s relevance in building a more just and committed society for vulnerable groups. Additionally, during the presentation, the Councilor for Environment, Sustainability, Natural Spaces, and Animal Welfare, Llorenç Bauzà, praised both the Ornithological Association and ASPACE, referring to them as “great social projects” that have contributed to improving the quality of life in Palma.
