Her Majesty Queen Sofía presided yesterday over the traditional 2025 Holy Week Concert at the Cathedral-Basilica of Santa María de Mallorca, a musical and charitable event which this year featured as its central piece the moving Requiem by Gabriel Fauré. The event, held in support of the social organisation Projecte Home Balears, brought together leading authorities and figures from the institutional landscape of the Balearic Islands.

Queen Sofía was accompanied by the President of the Balearic Islands, Margalida Prohens; the President of the Parliament, Gabriel Le Senne; the Government Delegate in the Balearic Islands, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal; and the Mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez Llabrés, among other public officials.

Orquestra Simfònica de les Illes Balears

The performance was given by the Orquestra Simfònica de les Illes Balears, conducted by Pablo Mielgo, together with the Coral de la Universitat de les Illes Balears, led by Núria Cunillera Salas. Solo parts were performed by Mallorcan soprano Lorena Bonnin and baritone José Antonio López, who brought special sensitivity to this piece, composed by Fauré in 1888 for a funeral mass at the Church of La Madeleine in Paris.

This benefit concert has been held since 2007, and without interruption since 2010, with the aim of raising funds for addiction treatment and prevention programmes run by Projecte Home Balears. This NGO, founded in 1985, provides comprehensive care to people facing addiction, supporting their autonomy and social reintegration.

Queen Sofía’s presence, marked by her long-standing commitment to social causes, highlights the institutional support and the cultural and humanitarian value of this event, which has become a key occasion of the Mallorcan Holy Week calendar.
