Four dead, seven seriously injured and around a dozen seriously injured, is the tragic balance of the collapse of the Medusa Beach Club in Platja de Palma. The event took place at around 8:30 pm on Thursday 23rd May when the terrace of the premises collapsed onto the ground floor, which also gave way until it fell into the basement, according to Eder García, head of the Palma Fire Brigade. The restaurant had a large clientele at the time, mostly foreigners.
Neighbours and tourists who were in the area were the first to alert the authorities to the tragedy when they heard the loud noise caused by the collapse and the cries for help. A dozen ambulances from SAMU061 and members of the Palma fire brigade, the National Police and the local police were on the scene to carry out rescue and health care work. The neighbouring buildings were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Marga Prohens, president of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Jaime Martínez, mayor of Palma, and Alfonso Rodríguez, the government delegate on the islands, went to the scene to inquire about the situation. On her social networks, Prohens wanted to convey “all my affection and warmth to the families of the four people who lost their lives in this tragic incident and to wish all the injured a speedy recovery” and to thank the emergency services for their work.
Hours later, the bodies were identified: two young German tourists aged between 20 and 30, a 44-year-old man of Senegalese origin, and a restaurant worker born in Navarre.
Palma City Council has decreed three days of mourning.
