The 2024-2025 flu vaccination campaign in the Balearic Islands has seen a significant improvement in vaccination coverage, reaching 30.9% of the target population, which represents an increase of 8% compared to the 22.68% achieved in the previous campaign. This progress marks a positive shift in vaccination rates, which had been affected by low coverage in recent years, particularly following the Covid-19 pandemic.According to data provided by the Ministry of Health, a total of 187,794 people in the Balearic Islands have been vaccinated against the flu, out of an estimated total of 606,685 people in the target population. This number is 7.7% higher than the 174,245 vaccinated in the previous season. In absolute terms, 13,549 more vaccines have been administered compared to last year.

Vaccination coverage by island:

  • Majorca: 148,713 vaccinated (30.9% of the target population).
  • Menorca: 14,150 vaccinated (29.7%).
  • Ibiza and Formentera: 18,304 vaccinated (23.7%).

Pilot flu vaccination programme in schools

The Ministry of Health has also highlighted the success of the pilot flu vaccination programme in schools, which achieved an immunisation rate of 43.2% among children aged 24 to 59 months, more than double the percentage achieved among the general child population, which was 21.77%. This programme was implemented in 24 schools across the Balearic Islands, with 1,217 intranasal vaccines administered.

Flu and COVID vaccination in the Balearic Islands

On the other hand, vaccination among healthcare professionals has increased significantly, reaching 28.73% coverage, compared to 15.8% last year. This increase is attributed to the campaign’s emphasis on the responsibility of healthcare workers to protect vulnerable patients.

Regarding other at-risk groups, vaccination among people over 60 years old has reached 43.6% in the Balearic Islands, and pregnant women have achieved 17.44% coverage. Among children under 5 years old, 24.4% of the target population has been vaccinated, marking an increase of 4.5 percentage points compared to the previous year.

Covid-19 and RSV

The campaign also included vaccinations against Covid-19, with 24.2% coverage, and against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), achieving a 75.3% immunisation rate in newborns, similar to the previous campaign.

The Consellera of Health, Manuela García, has emphasised that this year’s objective was to reverse the negative trend of low coverage from recent years, and the results obtained so far are an important step in improving protection against the flu and other seasonal diseases.
