The Year of the Fire Horse: meaning in 2026
Chinese New Year 2026, officially celebrated on 17 February, is dedicated to the Fire Horse, a particularly symbolic pairing within the lunar calendar. The Horse represents energy, movement, freedom and an enterprising spirit, while the Fire element is associated with passion, transformation and vital force.
In Chinese tradition, this year is seen as a favourable period for change, new projects and decisive action — values that align well with the open and dynamic character this celebration has acquired in Palma.

Pere Garau, the epicentre of Chinese New Year in Palma
The Pere Garau neighbourhood has played a key role for years in organising and hosting Chinese New Year in the city. The celebration has become naturally integrated into the area’s cultural life, turning into an intercultural meeting point where residents, families and visitors share a festivity that is now part of Palma’s popular calendar.
The choice of Plaça de Pere Garau is no coincidence: it is a lively, diverse setting that reflects the city’s multicultural character.
Organisation and spirit of the event
Chinese New Year in Palma is promoted by the Chinese Association of the Balearic Islands (ACHINIB), an organisation founded by businessman and philanthropist Fang Ji with the aim of spreading Chinese culture, promoting inclusion and strengthening social, cultural and economic ties between China and the Balearic Islands.
The association highlights that this festivity:
- Has successfully become part of local culture, with the support of institutions and businesses.
- Has a strong emotional component for the Chinese community living in Mallorca.
- Acts as a tool for social cohesion and intercultural dialogue.
- Helps attract visitors and encourages cultural, year-round tourism.
ACHINIB also maintains its commitment to preserving the authenticity of Chinese New Year, even as interest grows in other places seeking to replicate the celebration.
A key cultural date in Mallorca’s winter calendar
The Chinese New Year 2026 in Palma will once again be one of the island’s most popular and photographed winter celebrations. Its blend of tradition, public participation and international reach makes it a strategic event both culturally and for tourism.
