Pedro Sánchez has announced the anti-crisis measures that the government will introduce as of 1 January. Among them, the reduction of VAT on many foodstuffs.
Foodstuffs that will reduce VAT in 2023
In addition to the VAT reduction on basic foodstuffs, the central government announced the 200 euro cheque for food. The VAT reductions on foodstuffs are as follows:
Reduction of VAT on staple foods from 4% to 0%.

- Flour
- Milk
- Cheese
- Eggs
- Fruit
- Vegetables
- Vegetables
- Pulses
- Tubers
- Cereals
VAT reduced from 10% to 5%.
- Oil
- Pasta
At Tuesday’s press conference, the president announced that VAT will also be lowered on products such as oil and pasta, which will be reduced from 10% to 5%.
Products not affected by the VAT cut
Other foods that the government has not considered to be staple foods are meat and fish. These foods will, for the time being, not be affected by the VAT reduction in 2023.
In addition, alcohol and sugary drinks will continue to be taxed at 21% VAT. Similarly, tobacco will continue to be taxed after several tax increases.
