The month of May again registered, for the seventh consecutive month, record highs in affiliation in the Balearic Islands, with a total of 566,847 people employed, which means a year-on-year increase of 110,773 workers (24.3%), the highest value in Spain, which grew by only 5%. In addition, unemployment in May in the Islands stood at 36,203 people, which represents a drop of 51.9% compared to a year ago, and the lowest record in the Islands for 15 years.
The Councilor of Economic Model, Tourism and Labor, Iago Negueruela, presented the data of affiliation and unemployment of last month together with the general director of Economic Model and Employment, Llorenç Pou, and expressed that “the values of May leave an administrative unemployment rate of 6%, which is practically a full employment.”
In this sense, he indicated that “the Balearic Islands are already in a different moment, where the period of recovery of the labor market after the pandemic is already closed, and is moving towards a new paradigm of employment, advancing on a path of growth as never before experienced, both in terms of quantity and quality of employment”.
For the second consecutive month, indefinite-term contracts now account for around 80% of all new hires, with a new paradigm where indefinite-term contracts are already the norm. In just one year, the contractual modality has been reversed: it has gone from 18.8% of permanent contracts in May 2021 to 78.9% in May 2022. By islands, it is remarkable the indefinite contracting of Formentera, which was 94.9%, followed by Ibiza, 89.2%, Menorca 85.1% and Mallorca 75.5%.
The conseller also stressed that with data from April (the last month with available data), “the Balearic Islands have registered 111,000 people working discontinuous permanent workers, a fact that is an absolute historical record that had never happened, even in the months of greatest tourist activity.”
Consistent with the previous data, temporary hiring continues to fall, standing at 17%, when in January it was 28% and, in April 2019, 33%. With the fall in the temporary employment rate, the minister indicated that “the Balearic Islands are already on a European path of quality employment.”
38,148 less unemployed people than a year ago
Finally, the month of May registered 36,203 unemployed persons, the lowest figure in the last 15 years for this period, and representing a drop of 51.9% with respect to a year ago,
The number of unemployed persons also showed a significant drop with respect to April, 13.6% and 5,712 fewer unemployed than in the previous month.
