The President and CEO of Meliá Hotels International, Gabriel Escarrer, has been appointed an Honorary Member of the Order of the British Empire by King Charles III. The distinction recognises his contribution to the safety of British visitors in the Balearic Islands and his economic commitment to the United Kingdom.

The British Embassy in Madrid has particularly highlighted Escarrer’s work to promote responsible tourism in the islands. It has also recognised his involvement in initiatives aimed at preventing incidents among the thousands of young British people who visit the archipelago each year.

These include his support for Stick With Your Mates, a UK Government campaign aimed at encouraging young people to behave safely while on holiday. According to the Embassy, the Mallorcan businessman’s involvement helped mobilise local institutions and stakeholders.

The honour awarded by King Charles III also takes into account Escarrer’s business track record in the United Kingdom. Meliá Hotels International has been operating in the country for 25 years.

During this period, the company has invested more than £400 million. Its activity has also helped create thousands of jobs, according to figures released by the Embassy.

Gabriel Escarrer’s appointment to the Order of the British Empire therefore recognises two areas. Firstly, his involvement in improving the safety of British tourists travelling to Spain. Secondly, his contribution to strengthening economic ties between Spain and the United Kingdom.

Ambassador highlights his contribution in the Balearic Islands

The British Ambassador to Spain, Alex Ellis, highlighted Escarrer’s commitment both to visitors and to relations between the two countries.

“Gabriel Escarrer has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to the safety of British citizens visiting Spain and to strengthening the ties between our two countries,” he said.

Ellis also highlighted the businessman’s role in the Balearic Islands. According to the Ambassador, his leadership has helped make destinations such as the islands safer for millions of visitors.

He also highlighted Meliá’s investment in the United Kingdom over recent decades. For Ellis, the appointment recognises “an exceptional contribution in both areas”.
