storm rain

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has declared a yellow alert in Mallorca due to rain and storms from 10:00 AM this Monday until midnight, when an orange alert is expected in the south and north of the island. This situation is expected to continue until 1:00 PM on Tuesday.

According to Aemet’s bulletin, there is a 40%-70% probability of storms and rainfall that could drop up to 30 litres per square metre in one hour in the Serra de Tramuntana and in the north and northeast of Mallorca. In the Llevant, interior and south of the island, the probability is lower, between 10%-40%, with rainfall possibly reaching 20 litres per square metre in one hour.

During the early hours of the morning, the south and east of Mallorca could experience rainfall totals of up to 50 litres per square metre in one hour and 120litres per square metre in over 2–3 hours, accompanied by wind gusts of 80–90 km/h and occasional hail.

Palma activates the Municipal Territorial Plan (Platerpalma)

In view of this weather event, the Palma City Council has activated the Municipal Territorial Plan (Platerpalma) in pre-emergency phase, taking preventive measures to ensure the safety of the population. Measures include:

  • Closure of Passeig Sagrera and the parks Bellver, Can Tarres and Sa Riera from 00:00 on Tuesday. These restrictions will remain in place for the entire alert period.

  • Recommendations to the public to minimise travel, avoid crossing streams or low-lying areas, not take shelter under isolated trees, and secure doors, windows and outdoor objects against the wind.

  • Special caution for drivers, avoiding stopping in areas at risk of flooding, and it is advised not to enter basements or flooded car parks to retrieve vehicles or personal belongings.

The City Council urges the public to follow the authorities’ instructions and stay informed via the official channels of the Council.

Emergency Services recommend following these basic tips

Measures at home:

  • Secure doors and windows.
  • Stay in the upper areas of the house.
  • Remove from outside anything that could be carried away by water.
  • Move medicines, documents, valuables, as well as food and drinking water, to high places in the house. Also secure hazardous products.
  • Avoid basements and garages.
  • If water has already entered your home, switch off the main electricity supply.

Measures outdoors:

  • In the countryside, keep away from streams and flood-prone areas.
  • In urban areas, seek shelter in a building.
  • Do not walk through areas with moving water. The faster the water, the greater the danger.

Measures on the road:

  • Avoid travelling by car unless absolutely necessary.
  • If driving is necessary, reduce speed, increase the safety distance, and stick to motorways, dual carriageways, and main roads.
  • In case of low visibility, stop the vehicle and signal your position.
  • Do not enter flood-prone areas, even if the water appears shallow. Even a small depth of water can make cars float and be easily swept away.
  • If the car begins to float and is carried away, exit immediately. If you cannot use the door, use a window.
  • Abandon the vehicle and move to higher ground if the car becomes immobilised by water or if the water level reaches the axle.
  • Keep your mobile phone charged and ensure the vehicle has enough fuel.
  • Do not park on bridges, pavements, or river mouths.

In case of an emergency, call 112.
