The Consell de Mallorca today presented ‘Il trittico’, by Giacomo Puccini. The in-house production directed by stage director Rafel Duran and musical director Anna Hartman opens the Teatre Principal’s Opera Season 2024 on the 24th of November.
Palma’s Teatre Principal kicks off the 38th Opera Season 2024 on the 24th of November with ‘Il trittico’, an original work by Giacomo Puccini. The production will also be performed on Sunday the 26th of November, and for the first time it can be seen in its entirety in Mallorca.
During the presentation of the season today, the Consell de Mallorca’s Director of Culture, Guillem Ginard, stressed “the involvement of local talent in this premiere: both the stage director, Rafel Duran, and the set designer, Rafel Lladó, are Mallorcan, as are many of the soloists, such as Joan Laínez and Marga Cloquell, among others”. He also explained that this is an in-house production, and all the costumes and scenery have been created for this opera at the Teatre Principal.
The Teatre Principal’s New Opera Season
‘Il trittico’, which premiered in New York in 1918, brings together three short operas: ‘Il tabarro’, ‘Sudor Angelica’ and ‘Gianni Schicchi’, which have death as a common element, although each of them is treated differently. Some authors and opera scholars claim that the three stories are taken from passages in Dante’s ‘Divine Comedy’.
The premiere of the production in Palma’s Teatre Principal will be on Friday the 24th of November, at 8 pm, and on Sunday the 26th of November, at 6 pm. It should be noted that spectators who need it will have access to the ‘Principal Petit’ childcare service during the performance. Each of the three short operas will last 55 minutes, with two 20-minute intermissions.
‘Il trittico’, which can be seen next weekend in the Sala Grande of the Teatro Principal, has stage direction by Rafel Duran and musical direction by Norwegian Anna Hartmann. The artistic team is joined by Rafel Lladó (set design), David Picazo (lighting), Maria Miró (costumes), Roberto G. Alonso (choreography) and Joan Rodón (video creation). In addition to the Cor del Teatre Principal, conducted by Francesc Bonnín, and the Orquesta Sinfónica de las Islas Baleares, this opera features a cast of soloists headed by Mario Cassi, Maria Angela Marini, Lasha Sesitashvili, among others.
